ReTAX: A Step in the Automation of Taxonomic Revision

چکیده
Classification is an essential process in science. The creation (and refinement) of taxonomies is basic to many scientific tasks. Activities such as theory formation, law induction, and experimentation undoubtedly rely upon a sound classification of elements, e.g., physical, chemical, biological. More specifically, taxonomic revision can play an important role in scientific discovery. The detection of an anomalous experience which cannot be accommodated by an established scientific taxonomy may lead to the revision of the taxonomy; but it may also affect other scientific knowledge. In other words, the revision of taxonomic knowledge may challenge related scientific principles (or theories), which should then be reconsidered and investigated experimentally (Sokal, 1974). As noted by Shrager and Langley (1990), the formation (and revision) of taxonomies is one of the principal activities which should be considered in the computational simulation of

Taxonomy Revision in Botany: A Simulation of Historical Data
In this abstract we present ReTAX, a system for taxonomy revision in Botany. The function of ReTAX is to revise, and eventually modify, a taxonomic hierarchy as novel inconsistent data are provided. The system has been applied to replicate some taxonomic revisions which have taken place historically in the botanical family Ericaceae. As noted by different researchers (e.g., Lakatos, 1976; Kulka...
متن کاملTAXONOMIC REVISION OF THE CYPERUS SUBGENUS CYPERUS IN IRAN
The genus Cyperus belongs to tribe Cypereae, subfamily Cyperoideae and family Cyperaceae that is the largest genus in this family after Carex. The classification of genus Cyperus is still unsettled because of morphological variations and therefore, makes determination of subgenera boundaries and species difficult. In Flora Iranica (KUKKONEN 1998) this genus was divided to six subgenera. In this...
متن کاملA TAXONOMIC REVISION OF THE GENERA STERIGMOSTEMUM AND PETINIOTIA IN IRAN
The genus Sterigmostemum M. Bieb. belongs to the tribe Hesperideae of the Brassicaceae family. The results of this research confirmed the recognition of five species in Iran: S.incanum, S. sulphureum, S. ramosissimum, S. acanthocarpum and S. longistylum. S. laevicaule is excluded from the genus Sterigmostemum and is regarded as a synonym of Erysimum crassicaule. The new combination, namely, ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Multi-step Oral-revision Processes on Iranian EFL Learners’ Argumentative Writing Achievement
The purpose of this study was to explore the role of two multi-step oral-revision processes as feedback providing tools on Iranian EFL learners’ argumentative writing achievement. The participants taking part in this study were 45 Iranian EFL students who were randomly assigned into three groups. The participants of the groups were given three argumentative writing assignments, each assignment ...
متن کاملA revision of the genus Roemeria in Iran
In this study, a taxonomic status of the genus Roemeria in Iran is reviewed. The study of morphological characters of collected and herbarium specimens led to the introducing of two new taxa, namely, R. hybrida subsp. maculata and R. refracta var. alba. In addition, five synonymies are made as following: R. refracta var. albomarginata and R. refracta subsp. occidentalis as synonymies of R. refr...
